Since 1997, the Kalluri Lab has proudly hosted more than 200 research trainees, including postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate students and visiting scholars. Our laboratory also includes a dedicated team of staff scientists, research assistants and technicians. Alumni of the Kalluri Laboratory now hold faculty positions around the world, have risen to substantive leadership positions within academia and have founded successful biotechnology companies.

Dr. Kalluri earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Kansas Medical Center and his M.D. from Brown University Medical School. Kalluri was a postdoctoral fellow and a research associate at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and studied immunology and mechanisms associated with tissue injury and repair, employing organ fibrosis as model system. In 1997, he moved to Harvard Medical School as an assistant professor of Medicine and as a faculty member in the Department of Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. In 2006, Kalluri was appointed the chief of the Division of Matrix Biology and was promoted to professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He held faculty appointments in the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, Harvard MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, Harvard Stem Cell Institute and the Division of Nephrology of the Children¡¯s Hospital Boston.
Kalluri was recruited to MD Anderson in 2012 as professor and chair of Cancer Biology, a position he held for nearly 13 years, and the director of the Metastasis Research Center. He holds the Frederick F. Becker Distinguished University Chair of Cancer Research. His laboratory is broadly interested in investigating the functional contribution of cell and tissue microenvironment and exosomes in cancer progression and metastasis.

Michelle graduated from Texas A&M University with a B.S. degree in marine biology and from Florida International University with a M.S. in Public Health. Prior to joining the Kalluri Lab in 2017, she worked at Âé¶¹Ó³» Medical Branch, where she investigated virulence gene regulation, pathogenic mechanisms, and vaccine candidates for select agent pathogens. Michelle is the laboratory manager for the Kalluri Laboratory, overseeing reagent purchasing, animal colony management, laboratory logistics, IACUC and IRB submissions and approvals, and general laboratory maintenance. Additionally, Michelle actively participates in and contributes to several research projects. In her free time, she is an enthusiastic hockey fan, cheering on her favorite team, the Dallas Stars, and is also an avid aquarist.

Roxanna brings extensive experience in administrative coordination and staff onboarding to the lab. She assists with laboratory operations and organizational efficiency, including procurement, vendor management, financial reporting and resource allocation. Roxanna also handles coordination of our laboratory events and conferences, enhancing the lab culture and creating impactful experiences for our team. Day-to-day, Roxanna assists the lab with scheduling, time-off requests and logistical support for our many trainees and staff scientists.

Krishnan Mahadevan, M.D., Ph.D.

Krishnan completed his M.D. from JIPMER, India in 2013. He worked as a clinical research fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston until 2015. He joined the Kalluri Laboratory in 2016. His thesis goal is to understand the role of T-cells in pancreatic cancer progression and therapy response.
Xunian Zhou, Ph.D.

Xunian received her Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in December 2017. During that time, she investigated the underlying anti-cancer mechanisms of a small molecule in breast cancer models. She studies the function of tumor stroma and exosomes in cancer. During her free time, she delights in cooking and reading. Additionally, she finds joy in exploring the outdoors and appreciating the beauty of nature, especially with her family.
Meagan Conner, Ph.D.

Meagan received her B.S. from Texas A&M University in psychology in 2012. She then went on the attend Stony Brook University in New?York where she researched early-stage Parkinson¡¯s disease-related cognitive?decline and earned her Ph.D. in neuroscience in 2021. Her current research?focuses on the role of tumor stroma and the functional contribution of?extracellular matrix components in influencing the initiation and progression?of glioblastoma.
Kaira A. Church, Ph.D.

Kaira received her bachelor¡¯s degree in biochemistry and genetics in 2015 from Texas A&M University (GIG¡¯EM AGS!). Following a brief period where she was a research science associate, she attended Âé¶¹Ó³» at San Antonio where she earned her Ph.D. in molecular microbiology and immunology in 2022, where she characterized the role of microglia-mediated inflammation in the development and progression of disease in murine models of multiple sclerosis (MS) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). Her research interests include neuroinflammation and investigating the mechanisms governing glial and vascular biology in the healthy and diseased CNS to better understand the cellular dynamics that preface and provoke the development of various neurodegenerative disorders. Furthermore, she is particularly interested in the dynamics of vascular remodeling and the heterogeneity of glial cell populations and how this heterogeneity regulates glial cell subtype responses.?As a pop-culture enthusiast mixed with a nerdy planetary science fanatic, during her free time, Kaira enjoys binging new reality TV shows and visiting science museums.?
Yingying Hu, Ph.D.

Yingying received her Ph.D. from the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Science in December 2020. Her Ph.D. research focused on the development of protein/mRNA vaccines against various cancers. She joined the Kalluri Laboratory in March 2023 to investigate the personalized mRNA vaccines-based combination strategy to control pancreatic cancer.
Moumita Sarkar, M.S., Ph.D.

Moumita¡¯s journey in science began with a bachelor¡¯s in Biotechnology from Cotton College, Gauhati University (2014), followed by a master¡¯s in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at Tezpur Central University (2016). Fascinated by the intersection of hormones and cancer biology, she pursued her Ph.D. at the National Institute of Immunology, Jawaharlal Nehru University, where she explored how female reproductive hormones influence cancer cell growth and survival, earning her degree in 2022. In 2023, she brought her curiosity and drive to the Kalluri Laboratory, where she is uncovering the biology of stromal vascular cells, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), and exosomes in aging. Beyond the lab, Moumita finds creativity and joy in cooking, traveling, and long walks. She values time spent with her husband, family, and friends, which keeps her grounded and inspired in both life and science.
Yi Jiang, Ph.D.

Yi received her Ph.D. in biology in 2023 from Tsinghua University. Her Ph.D. research focused on unraveling the effect and mechanism of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) on the metastasis of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). During her leisure time, she enjoys traveling, dancing, and yoga.
Emi Kawakita, M.D., Ph.D.

Emi completed her undergraduate in medicine in 2016 and graduate studies in 2021 at Kanazawa Medical University, Japan. After having finished the residency program as a general physician, Emi trained as a diabetologist and a endocrinologist. Emi's Ph.D. research focused on the effects of anti-diabetic drugs on breast cancer progression.
Ester Etti Azulay, Ph.D.

Etti received her Ph.D. in health sciences from Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel in 2024. During that time, she studied the role of pancreatic cancer associated EVs in cancer associated fibroblasts activation and extracellular matrix dynamics. In addition, she studies lung cancer associated EVs protein cargo.
Miguel Pereira Da Silva, Ph.D.

Miguel received his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical technology, pharmaceutical sciences, from University of Coimbra, Portugal, in collaboration with University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in which he developed advanced nanosystems for pancreatic cancer-targeted therapies. Miguel is interested in exploring innovative biomimetic nanodevices for pancreatic cancer management. In his leisure time he enjoys nature, animals, networking, cinema, theater and photography.
Greta Carobolante, Ph.D.

Greta received her Masters degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology in 2020 from the University of Padova, Italy. During her graduate studies, she completed a research internship at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, King¡¯s College London. Greta earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Biomedicine from the University of Trieste, Italy, in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute (CRO) in Aviano, Italy. Her doctoral research focused on investigating the role of the extracellular matrix in regulating endothelial barrier integrity and immune activation within the tumor microenvironment.

Paul received his bachelor¡¯s degree in biomedical engineering from Columbia University in 2021. After graduation, he worked with a medical device company and the New York Blood Center for one year. In 2022, he joined Rice University for his Ph.D. degree in bioengineering and joined the Kalluri Laboratory for his Ph.D. thesis work. Paul¡¯s current research focuses on understanding key molecular mechanisms underlying diseases to generate novel exosome-based drug therapies that target macular degeneration and pancreatic cancer. In his free time, he loves to explore the parks, restaurants and thrift shops of Houston.
Tristan Nguyen, B.S.

Tristan received his bachelor¡¯s degree in biology from Texas A&M University in 2022. During his undergraduate studies, he worked as a researcher and later advanced to a research assistant position. He contributed to projects on the cytotoxicity of nanoparticles against breast cancer cells, the role of cancer-associated fibroblasts in the tumor microenvironment, and the effects of circadian rhythm disruption on tumorigenesis. Tristan is an M.D./Ph.D. student at Âé¶¹Ó³» Medical Branch, training to become a physician-scientist with a focus on cancer research. He will be conducting his Ph.D. thesis work under the direction of the Kalluri Laboratory. Outside of the lab, Tristan enjoys training and competing in judo, spending time with friends and family and volunteering in the community.
Aaron Bickert, B.S.

Aaron graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2018 with a B.S. in neuroscience. He then worked as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health in a cancer biology laboratory that studies the mechanisms underlying intrinsic and acquired resistance to chemotherapy in a variety of cancer models. He is interested in how immune cells shape the tumor microenvironment and how this affects response to anti-cancer drugs in models of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. When he¡¯s not in the lab, Aaron enjoys playing tennis, running and learning new languages.
Beatriz Schueng Zancanela, B.S.

Beatriz came from Brazil to pursue her bachelor¡¯s degree in biological science with a focus on microbiology at the University of Southern Mississippi. She graduated Magna cum laude from the Southern Mississippi Honors College in 2021. After receiving an NSF Post Baccalaureate Award, Beatriz pursued her scientific interests in the lab where she investigated the role of Piwi-interacting RNAs during regenerative processes in lophotrochozoans, spanning from earthworms to octopuses. She joined the Molecular and Translational Biology Ph.D. program at the MD Anderson UTHealth Houston Graduate School in the fall of 2023. Beatriz investigates how changes in the tissue microenvironment due to chronic tissue injury leads to the emergence of lung cancer. In her spare time, Beatriz is a video game and sports enthusiast. Her favorite sports teams are Fluminense, Real Madrid, Saints and the Astros.

Ryan earned his bachelor's degree in biochemistry with a minor in statistics from the University of California, Riverside in 2023. His current interests in the lab include investigating exosomes, fibroblasts and the tumor microenvironment. In his free time, Ryan enjoys golfing, pickleball and exploring Houston.
Beatrice Pforr, B.S.

Beatrice earned her B.S. in Bioengineering from Northeastern University in 2022. While at Northeastern, she did two co-ops, one at Brigham and Women¡¯s Hospital in Dr. Scherzer¡¯s Parkinson¡¯s Neurogenetics laboratory and the other at Moderna Therapeutics in the Rare Disease department. After her undergraduate studies, Beatrice joined Dr. Matthew Disney¡¯s lab at UF Scripps as a research technician where she worked on RNA-binding small molecules as therapeutic modalities for targeting the COVID-19 RNA genome and the C-MYC transcription factor. In 2024, she began her Ph.D. at Rice University. Her research interests lie in exosome engineering and therapeutic potential. Outside of the lab, Beatrice enjoys running, spending time at the beach, and keeping up with pop culture.

Hikaru Sugimoto, M.D., Ph.D.
Research Scientist
Joined the lab in 2001
Hikaru completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in medicine at Okayama University, Japan. After having finished the residency program as a general physician, he trained as a diabetes specialist and a nephrologist. He moved to Boston in 1999 for a postdoctoral fellowship to study mechanisms associated with diabetic nephropathy. In 2001, he joined the Kalluri Lab in Boston to study tumor angiogenesis and develop novel angiogenesis inhibitors for treatment of cancer. His current research interests are to find new therapies for organ fibrosis and cancer metastasis. Hikaru also serves as the resident mouse surgeon in the laboratory and trains new graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Hikaru enjoys playing tennis when not focused on science.
Barbara Moreno Diaz, B.S.

Barbara received her bachelor¡¯s degree in biology from Texas A&M University in 2021. She joined the Kalluri Laboratory as a research assistant in 2021. Her research is focused on understanding the mechanisms of response and resistance to KRAS inhibition in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, with a particular emphasis on the role of the tumor microenvironment (TME) in modulating treatment outcomes.

Ana received her B.S. in biochemistry from New Mexico State University in 2022. She joined the Kalluri Laboratory in September 2022 for her M.S. thesis work. Ana¡¯s current research focuses on the impact of the epithelial to mesenchymal transition program on the efficacy of a small molecule inhibitor of oncogenic KRASG12D in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Outside of lab, Ana is a dog mom and enjoys reading, playing video games and staying active.

Shreyasee Kumbhar, Ph.D.

Shreyasee Kumbhar received her master¡¯s in cell biology from the University of Connecticut. Since then she has worked in industry in the U.S. and India in various areas of drug discovery and development. She joined the Kalluri Lab in 2023 and is responsible for various flow cytometry and imaging platforms in the lab. She is involved in lab projects that require flow-based and spatial phenotyping experiments. She also helps lab members with studies using these technology platforms. When she is not working, Shreyasee enjoys cooking, listening to books and podcasts, watching movies and dancing.

Ana?s completed her bachelor¡¯s degree in biomedical sciences at the University of Namur, in Belgium, where she recently graduated from their master¡¯s program with a focus in preclinical studies. Ana?s joined the lab in 2024 for an internship and is now part of the lab as a research assistant. She is excited to gain experience in translational studies to further pursue her research interest in cancer biology. In her free time, Ana?s enjoys going on hikes with her dogs and watching movies.

Johanna worked as a Supervisor of Animal Resources in the Department of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery at MD Anderson for several years before joining the Kalluri Laboratory. Johanna helps researchers in the lab with mice experiments, IACUC protocols, mouse husbandry, and surgeries. Johanna also participates in projects related to eye diseases and exosomes.

Bingrui (Brian) Li, Ph.D.

Brian received his Ph.D. in biomedical informatics from MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in 2023. He joined the Kalluri Lab in 2020 as a graduate research assistant followed by a postdoctoral fellowship. His research focuses on developing novel computational algorithms for exosome-based cancer diagnosis, investigating the tumor microenvironment by integrating various omics data and developing novel therapies.

Yifei (Fay) Liu received her Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from University College of London (UCL) where she studied biosensors and Brian-Computer Interfaces. She previously compelted three years of undergraduate study at UCL, earning a first-class degree. Fay joined the lab in 2025 as a Ph.D. student, jointly supervised by Ashok Veeraraghavan at Rice University. Fay is developing a novel implantable camera to study exosomes detection and trafficking in the brain, a novel diagnostic for neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.
Aditya Chandra Mandal, M.S.

Aditya earned a dual Bachelors and Masters of Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology. His research experience includes application of AI approaches for biomedical optics and medical diagnostics. He is a Ph.D. student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering program at Rice University, completing his thesis in the Kalluri Lab. Aditya is developing an AI-platform for histopathology analysis.
Zihan Zhao, B.S.

Zihan received her Bachelor of Engineering in the School of Precision Instruments at Tianjin University, China, in 2024. She joined the PhD Program in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University and will complete her thesis in the Kalluri Lab. She is working to develop next generation exosomes-based imaging modalities for early detection of cancers, especially brain and pancreatic cancers.

Tejas Saboo aims to contribute to application-driven research that integrates quantitative methods, real-world data, and social science frameworks to help stakeholders make equitable decisions that improve health outcomes at scale. Tejas earned a B.S. in computer science and mathematics from UT Austin in 2022. He worked as a machine learning engineer at a unicorn startup and as a quantitative trader at an algorithmic high-frequency trading firm. In 2024, he joined the Kalluri Lab's Computational and AI group, where his research focuses on creating AI systems to accelerate scientific discovery, developing foundation machine learning models for longevity, and architecting computational algorithms for exosome-based cancer diagnostics.
Jiacheng (Ken) Sun, M.C.S.

Ken earned his B.S. in computer science from The Pennsylvania State University in 2020 and his master¡¯s in computer science from Rice University in 2023. He applies artificial intelligence and computer vision to cancer biology, focusing on developing software and tools to support research. Ken is dedicated to creating innovative solutions to advance scientific research.

Ziao received his masters degree in computer science from University of Virginia. He has significant machine learning expertise, evidenced by a patent and research paper, along with three years of software industry experience.
