MGUS Intake Clinic
MGUS, or monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance, is a non-cancerous condition caused by high levels of monoclonal protein, or M protein, in the blood.
People with MGUS have an increased risk for developing several cancerous and non-cancerous diseases. These include AL amyloidosis, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Waldenstrom¡¯s macroglobulinemia. Patients with MGUS need regular screening for these conditions.
The MGUS Intake Clinic provides a clear diagnosis to patients who have test results indicating they may have MGUS.
The clinic is led by Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) including physician assistants and nurse practitioners. It is supported by MD Anderson physicians.
After an initial evaluation by an APP, patients may get imaging exams, biopsies, additional labs and/or other tests. Results are reviewed by clinic APPs and doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating MGUS, including hematologists, pathologists, and radiologists.
If you receive a diagnosis of intermediate- or high-risk MGUS, smoldering myeloma, multiple myeloma, Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia or if there is concern for AL amyloidosis, you will see doctors in MD Anderson¡¯s Lymphoma/Myeloma Center. You also have the option to receive care at a different facility of your choice.
Who should come to the clinic
The MGUS Intake Clinic is open to new and existing MD Anderson patients.
Patients with MGUS are usually asymptomatic, but it can be associated with other non-myeloma diseases as well.
To qualify for an appointment, you must have test results that suggest you have MGUS. These may include blood or urine tests such as serum or urine electrophoresis, immunofixation or results from a bone marrow biopsy.
