MD Anderson¡¯s Colorectal Center is home to many of the world¡¯s leading physicians specializing in cancers of the lower digestive tract.
These medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and surgeons often focus on specific types and subtypes of colon cancer, rectal cancer and anal cancer. This gives them focused expertise in caring for patients. They bring this expertise to teams of physicians who work together to design treatment plans for each patient¡¯s unique needs.
Treatment starts with a precise diagnostic work-up that identifies the patient¡¯s specific type and subtype of cancer, as well as its stage. Care teams use this information to design treatment plans that may include radiation therapy and cancer drugs such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.
Surgery is also a key part of colorectal cancer care. Our surgeons treat many patients with minimally invasive techniques that require just a few small incisions. These procedures can support faster recovery, reduce hospital stays and preserve bowel and other body functions.
Our doctors are also world-leaders in surgery for recurrent cancer in the pelvis, as well as the ¡°watch and wait¡± approach to surgery, which can help you avoid surgery while the disease is closely monitored.
The center includes a dedicated Young-onset Colorectal Cancer Program to support people under age 50 diagnosed with the disease. This program connects younger patients with specialized services tailored to their unique needs. These services include counseling, integrative medicine and fertility preservation consultations.
Through the Genetic Counseling Services and the Familial High-risk Gastrointestinal Cancer Clinic, we also offer genetic testing and counseling to all colorectal cancer patients, as well as to families of patients with a hereditary cancer syndrome. If needed, care teams will develop screening plans for high-risk individuals. This screening can catch disease in its earliest stages, when it is most treatable.
