Ephrath is a sophomore at Rice University pursuing a B.S. in Biosciences (Pre-Med track), graduating in May 2028. She conducts research in the Segatori Lab on therapeutic strategies using mammalian cells and synthetic biological circuits, building on prior experience sequencing mitochondrial DNA of the endangered Houston toad. Alongside her research, she has gained clinical exposure through volunteering and physician shadowing, and leads campus health initiatives promoting education and equity. Ephrath is eager to expand her research expertise through the UPWARDS program while exploring diverse career paths in biomedical science.

Yusuf is an Honors Biomedical Sciences major at the University of Houston and aspires to become a physician-scientist (MD/PhD). He serves as an undergraduate research trainee at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he has contributed to projects in cancer biology, anesthesiology, and bioinformatics, leading to co-authorship on an upcoming manuscript and a conference presentation. His experiences combine rigorous research with clinical exposure and a strong commitment to addressing healthcare disparities. Beyond academics, Yusuf has demonstrated leadership through mentorship, student government, and health equity initiatives.

Benjamin is a sophomore at Rice University majoring in Cell and Molecular Biology. He has conducted advanced research in RNA therapeutics, gene editing, and cancer immunotherapy, including projects on modified mRNA synthesis, RNA ligation optimization, and Locked Nucleic Acid technologies. His long-term goal is to develop next-generation RNA-based immunotherapies, particularly CAR-NK and CAR-macrophage platforms, with a focus on accessibility and cost-effectiveness. Beyond academics, Benjamin is a QuestBridge Scholar and Bishnoi Research Scholar, actively engaged in leadership, ministry, and community service.

Jiwang is a returning Summer UPWARDS trainee and rising senior at Rice University, majoring in Exercise Physiology with a Minor in Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. As a current AYL UPWARDS trainee and returning UPWARDS/CURE trainee, he has notable cancer research experience, particularly in translational breast cancer therapies, with hands-on training in cell cycle checkpoint inhibitors and targeted molecular therapy. His experience includes cell cycle analysis, DNA damage repair mechanisms, and biomarker identification for potential responders. Jiwang is and has been an ideal trainee ¨C he is focused, dedicated and bright with an unmistakable passion for biomedical research and data analysis. As Vice President of Rice University¡¯s QuestBridge Chapter, he is committed to mentoring first-generation, low-income students in STEM research. With his academic excellence, hands-on research skills, commitment to advancing biomedical research, and dedication to community engagement, Jiwang is a standout UPWARDS/CURE trainee, poised to make a meaningful impact this summer.

This summer, she participated in the CPRIT-CURE Program at MD Anderson, studying transcription factor mutations in hematologic cancers. Daniella is passionate about developing targeted cancer therapies and plans to pursue graduate studies in biomedical research.

His work explores strategies to enhance tumor targeting and overcome immune suppression through TGF¦ÂNDII-engineered TILs and fucosylation. Carmen is a junior at Rice University majoring in Biosciences with a concentration in Cell Biology and Genetics and minoring in Medical Humanities. Motivated by her mother¡¯s breast cancer journey, she has pursued oncology research from high school through independent projects at Rice, including work with IL-6 knockout mouse models to study inflammatory signaling in breast cancer. She is skilled in molecular biology techniques such as PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and mouse colony management. Alongside her research, Carmen explores the ethical and social dimensions of cancer care through medical humanities and policy-focused internships, aspiring to a career as a physician-scientist.

Zara is a Mexican-American first generation student at UHD. Per Zara, ¡°I have been lucky to be a part of UPWARDSand Dr.Calin's lab for a year now, where I have been able to apply my education as well as learn many new concepts and techniques, since I am currently investigating the role of an ultra-conserved element in a knockout mouse model¡±. After graduation she plans to apply for PA school where she hopes to transfer all the skills and knowledge that she gained to be a part of a healthcare team. Zara¡¯s passions include traveling, learning about different cultures and tasting a variety of different cuisines. She recently returned from her first solo trip and she¡¯s in the process of learning a third language. In the future, Zara hopes to take her career around the world to see how different countries and cultures approach healthcare and how she can best utilize her passion, training, experience and skills to help people.
