Emerging Surgical Leaders Program
In a collaboration between the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Department of Surgical Oncology and the UT Health Houston McGovern Medical School, we are offering the Emerging Surgical Leaders Program to ¡°train and retain¡± talented medical students interested in surgical and/or oncologic specialties. While the University of Texas trains a significant number of medical students, many do not stay in Texas for surgical, let alone surgical oncology, training. Oftentimes, this is due to a lack of early, high-quality mentorship.
The Emerging Surgical Leaders Program is a 2-year structured mentorship and research curriculum for which students are paired with mentors within the Department of Surgical Oncology. The curriculum begins in the spring semester of the first year of medical school. It includes a paid research fellowship during the summer between the first and second year that will be offered through the MD Anderson CATALYST program. This is the time when most of the research will be completed. Students are expected to produce work that can be submitted to regional and national conferences. Research experiences can include either clinical or translational research projects depending on individual interest. After the summer research program, students will continue working with their mentors to finalize projects before entering their clerkship year.
