About the Program
Career Entry Competencies
Graduates will demonstrate the skills necessary to advocate for patients and health care consumers by using data-driven insights to improve access, quality and delivery of care across health care institutions. Graduates will engage with health care teams and systems to identify inefficiencies, monitor patient outcomes, and contribute to institutional improvements that support safe, effective and patient-centered care.
At career entry, the graduate will demonstrate the following entry-level skills:
- Analyze patient data to identify trends in health service utilization, outcomes, and access to care.
- Use health care data and metrics to support recommendations for system improvements and resource allocation.
- Provide referrals based on data-supported community health resources and directories.
- Monitor care coordination efforts and identify gaps in service delivery using proven data sources.
- Document and report patient advocacy activities, service gaps and areas requiring follow-up or systems-level attention.
- Assist in developing and delivering training for health care teams on patient engagement strategies and effective communication.
- Apply a team-based approach to care while collaborating with clinical and non-clinical staff to promote timely access to services, continuity of care and efficient resource use.
- Act as a liaison between patients, families, and care teams to clarify processes, support communication, and gather feedback for quality improvement.
- Respond to patient concerns and inquiries and escalate, as needed for timely resolution.
- Communicate patient feedback and service issues to appropriate departments for follow-up and potential process improvement.
- Coordinate with quality and compliance teams to investigate and resolve patient complaints and identify systemic concerns requiring attention.
- Serve as an information resource for data related to patient access, satisfaction, and outcomes, utilizing internal and external databases.
- Participate in institutional quality improvement initiatives by providing data-supported insights and feedback on recurring patient concerns and service barriers.

Admissions
Acceptance to the School of Health Professions is competitive, and students are admitted twice a year. The Admissions Review Committee considers the following items in the review process: Overall GPA, completion of pre-requisite courses, essay, and professional references. Estimated tuition and fees for 12 semester credit hours is $2000.
Graduates' Employment Outlook
Graduates of the Healthcare Analytics and Advocacy (HAA) Program have many opportunities for future employment as they guide patients and their families to positively impact their overall health outcomes. Employment is found in hospitals, non-profit organizations, community agencies or independent practices. Depending on the institution, graduates may be responsible for interviewing patients, identifying care problems, making referrals to appropriate health care services, directing patient inquiries or complaints, facilitating satisfactory resolutions, explaining policies to patients, assisting patients with selecting health care providers, discussing treatment options, keeping track of prescriptions, accompanying patients to health care provider appointments or conducting studies regarding quality of care.
Graduates of the HAA program may apply for positions at hospitals, cancer centers, rehabilitation facilities, extended care facilities, clinics, government agencies, insurance companies, or for-profit advocacy firms. Graduates in this profession have opportunities for income growth, work-life balance, social impact and solid job prospects.
The reports that the average annual salary for patient advocates is $52,520. Graduates with little experience may earn $31,790 annually, with the potential to earn $75,140 annually with additional years of work experience.
