Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship
The Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship is focused on the multidisciplinary management of benign and malignant bone and soft-tissue tumors. The education program is multifaceted, encompassing the disciplines of orthopaedic surgical oncology, medical oncology, pathology, radiology (interventional/diagnostic), radiation oncology, and total management of patients, including long-term follow-up care.
A Letter from our Program Director
Â鶹ӳ» MD Anderson Cancer Center has the largest sarcoma center in the U.S., creating the ideal circumstance to be exposed to Orthopaedic Oncology. The Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship, sponsored by the Department of Orthopaedic Oncology, is focused on the multidisciplinary management of benign and malignant bone and soft-tissue tumors. The faculty of the Orthopaedic department is composed of seven sub-specialty trained orthopaedic oncologists: Valerae O. Lewis, M.D., (chair), Patrick P. Lin, M.D., Bryan S. Moon, M.D., Robert L. Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., Justin E. Bird, M.D., Shalin S. Patel, M.D., and Alysia K. Kemp, M.D. While united in their outcomes, each of the faculty trained at different institutions, thereby bringing a diversity of treatment approaches with excellent outcomes to the department.
The education program is multifaceted, encompassing all the disciplines managing primary (sarcoma) and metastatic musculoskeletal disease: orthopaedic oncology, medical oncology, pathology, radiology (interventional/diagnostic), radiation oncology, and clinical/basic research. The fellowship¡¯s objectives are to prepare the trainee for independent orthopaedic oncology practice and grant them the ability to develop an environment conducive to clinical and/or basic research in musculoskeletal oncology. Because of the nature of the institution, the fellow will see a broad selection of cases. While there is considerable exposure to the foundations of musculoskeletaloncology, at the conclusion of the fellowship, the fellow will be adept at the management of difficult, rare, and complex musculoskeletal (bone and soft tissue) tumors.
Given the prospectively maintained retrospective database dating back to 1956, the fellow has ample data and opportunity to participate in clinical research. In addition, collaboration with our subspecialty colleagues adds additional nuance to the approach to critical research questions. The Learning Cancer Outcome Program (LCORP) within the department offers an option and a database to critically examine orthopaedic oncology outcomes. The establishment of the Division of Surgery Ideas lab and having the Deputy Division Head for Innovation as a member of the department has opened up innovation as a sought-after research venue. The completion of one research project is required for graduation. The fellow will be sponsored to attend any meeting where she/he is presenting UT MD Anderson data/projects and has the option of attending the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual meeting; the fellow also will be an anticipated guest at the annual Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Meeting.
Applicants from the United States must have completed an orthopaedic residency and be Board-eligible or ¨Ccertified. Applicants from outside the United States must have a current ECFMG certificate.
Sincerely,
Valerae O. Lewis, M.D.

MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to encouraging good health and staying true to our mission to end cancer. If you are applying for a GME fellowship or residency program starting on or after July 1, 2016, please be advised that MD Anderson will have instituted a tobacco-free hiring process as part of its efforts to achieve these goals. If you are offered an appointment, you will be subject to a Pre-Employment Drug Screen for tobacco compounds in compliance with applicable state laws. If you do not pass the urine drug screening which includes testing for tobacco compounds, you CANNOT be appointed at MD Anderson. Should you fail to meet this contingency, MD Anderson will withdraw your offer of appointment for the academic year. You may reapply for the following academic year, but there are no guarantees that you will be offered a position as many of our programs are already filled for several years out.
