A note from Dr. DePinho
A word from the president
It is hard to believe we are already well into 2017. While accelerating change has become the new normal as we navigate the current health care environment, I am continually encouraged by your relentless support and wise guidance as members of the MD Anderson Cancer Center Board of Visitors. Your efforts play a significant role in MD Anderson's future and our ability to accomplish our mission to end cancer.
The power of the BOV has never been more visible than at our 75th anniversary celebration (view photos here) last November. Many of you traveled with your families to take part in the festivities, lending not only financial support but also your time and influence. This wonderful celebration for the ages raised more than $14 million. As we forge ahead in 2017, I am constantly reminded of your generosity and resolve to end cancer.
We also recently celebrated the life of a great man and medical icon - Dr. Mickey LeMaistre. Many of you knew MD Anderson's second president well and joined me in memorializing him in your own special way. Mickey was an outstanding physician, a gifted educator, a committed leader, a champion for cancer prevention and all-around extraordinary human being. He was our cherished friend. Our institution and all of us are better because of him. You can read his obituary .
This is an important time for MD Anderson. We are working to change the way we work and must be strategic and thoughtful in our solutions and decisions in all areas, from the clinic to the laboratory. One such change is the recent appointment of, to the senior leadership role of deputy president and chief operating officer. I have full confidence in Steve's clinical expertise, collaborative approach and deep understanding of the changing health care environment, which will serve MD Anderson well. You'll hear from Steve and learn more about the day-to-day management of MD Anderson in our next e-newsletter.
As we continue our efforts to deliver patient-centered, value-driven care, I encourage you as BOV members to keep our mission top of mind. Your expertise, guidance and support are recognized and appreciated. With our collective wisdom and dedication, we will continue our outstanding efforts as the world's most impactful cancer center.
Please feel free to reach out to me or Chair Jim Mulva if you'd like more information about how to get involved. It was wonderful to commemorate MD Anderson's 75th anniversary with so many of you, and I hope to share more celebrations soon. A list of upcoming events is included in this e-newsletter.
On behalf of my colleagues, thank you for your continued support and commitment as we work toward Making Cancer History.
With sincere appreciation,
Ron
